2015 Achievements

2015 was an incredible year!

From our humble beginnings in early 2009, Change the World Trust has experienced incredible growth. This was thanks to lots of hard work, dedication and key supporters and partners who assisted us in our journey.

We are now running 7 successful IT Centres in communities and high schools across South Africa & Mozambique. The passion for 'changing the world' and helping youth escape the cycle of poverty is what drives the team to continue striving for more and better.

IT Innovation Lab Launch at Redibone Secondary School, Mmabatho North West

Imagine being a young person from a township school in this day and age with no access to computers, internet access and a resource center to use for your school work. The direct impact of this is that you will be unskilled in ICT and unaware of global developments which limits your future potential academic and career options. The lack of such a skill will most likely hamper your chances of escaping the cycle of poverty, and subsequently limit your opportunities to advance in life.

This is unfortunately the reality in local schools across Mmabatho and the North West Province at large, and Change the World Trust with the support of Absa decided to intervene and establish an IT Innovation Lab to develop and upskill our youth at Redibone Secondary School. On Thursday 18 February, the school hosted high level delegates including the MEC of Finance, Mrs Nelson, Director of North West Department of Education Mr Monale and Absa leadership from across the Retail, Sales and Community Investment divisions. The launch also included the School Management Team, the Governing Body, selected talented students and the Change the World team who presided over the event.

Imagine being able to create your own app for a tablet or cellphone or even your own computer game. This was the goal put forward for children from eight schools in the rural areas around Hazyview when the Hour of Code campaign was launched on January 29.

Sebanele Mdluli and Siphesihle Mdluli are fascinated by coding the puzzle.

The Hour of Code is an international project that started in the USA to help children develop programming skills and has reached over 140 million students worldwide.

Change the World Trust SA decided to help bridge the gap between youth with computer science skills and vacant jobs in the IT sector by bringing the programme to South Africa. Hazyview and the Good Work Foundation (GWF), just outside town, was their first stop, with three other provinces on their agenda over the following weeks.

Change the World Trust and SEACOM continue to assist PC Technician Training for Youth in Zandspruit

Youth and tech-savvy community members are thrilled with the opportunity to receive scholarships and become accredited PC Technicians. This is thanks to a buzzing IT Training Centre funded by SEACOM and operating in a joint venture by local Impilo Foundation and Change the World Trust (CTW).

The IT Training Centre is meeting its goal of helping members of the community to develop advanced ICT skills that improve their employability and economic opportunities. With around 13,500 families living without basic facilities and services, Zandspruit is one of the most deprived communities in Gauteng. In just the past few months, 19 youth have begun their PC Technician training and over 40 other students have completed intermediate computer courses since January.

In early 2012, SEACOM worked with Change the World Trust to spearhead accredited training at the Impilo IT Training centre, which provides internet-connected computers, training and software to local students. Change the World is an organisation that aims to leverage innovative ICT training to infuse South African youth with powerful career visions.
