Empowering young people ICT skills

MIDRAND – NON-governmental organisation Hour of Code, which focuses on IT skills development and is supported by Change The World Trust, believes technology is the future and not knowing how to use a computer will soon be the same as being unable to read and write.

Attendees at the Hour of Code workshop

The organisation recently launched an educational programme called the Hour of Code, an hour-long introduction to computer science created to teach computer programming and to hold talks with 80 pupils from schools around Gauteng.

The Hour of Code project manager, David Silva said, “This campaign will change how teachers and students engage with each other as it allows for firsthand interaction, problem-solving and analytical skills development in a fun and immersive manner.”

About 40 leaders from local schools and non-governmental organisations that focus on education and youth, such as Afrika Tikkun, Ikamva Youth and Siyakhula Computers, took part in the introduction and training workshop on how to teach the Hour of Code programme in their respective communities. Silva added that the Hour of Code concept was initially started in the United States in 2008, and so far many people worldwide have taken part in this initiative.

Ziyaad Jina, a project manager at Afrika Tikkun said, “The Hour of Code will help them develop higher level skills, but most importantly give them something to really bite into and change their lives.”

An ICT teacher at Gideon Rambuwani School in Klipfontein View in Midrand said, “Young people have talent and potential but lack the support and exposure to innovation which limits their capabilities. This programme will positively impact them and help open their minds and allow them to dream big.”

Testimonial: Boitumelo Mahladisa – PC Basics Beneficiary

Boitumelo is a young lady who has big dreams and an even greater ambition to succeed in life. She was enrolled at Ikamva Youth and was recommended to come to our training school to improve her computer skills and learn more about her field of passion IT. She aims to become the first woman in her family to become a certified Programmer and is working hard to realising her dream every day. A shortage of money to pursue a formal qualification has not stopped her desire to learn and improve daily while pursuing her dream.

How has IT Training impacted your life?

I have become more confident in myself and in my ability to use computers, which I did not have before I enrolled for PC Basics.

What have you learnt so far?

I have learnt how to use the computer to do simple things such as typing documents, making presentations and creating formulas. These skills have greatly improved my computer and confidence, and I am happy about this change in my life.

What are you Future Plans?

I would like to keep on learning as much as possible about IT and all other aspects as technology is the future and I want to be a part of that. I would like to find a job related to IT through hard work and dedication.

Thank You

I am thankful to Change the World for the opportunity and also the main sponsor for my scholarship the Australian High Commission. My life has changed a lot since I started doing classes with Change the World. I now believe that whatever I want to be in life, I can do it because my eyes have been opened through learning the power of computers.
